This 2-hr virtual professional development will take you from exhausted to RENEWED as you set boundaries you can actually maintain in your current season so that you can last in this career and prioritize what matters most as a secondary science teacher.
“Having a plan with a mentor giving all their best advice is extremely helpful, especially addressing the gaps in my online education degree. Rebecca is very knowledgeable, empathetic, and organized and makes me feel like I can do it. Just having that reassurance that this isn't supposed to be a martyr job makes me think <bI can keep my weekends and evenings for myself and my family. My two kids are starting HS and MS this year and I don't want it to be like last year (my first year), where I was on my laptop every evening and weekend and then mornings, too. Plus, I'm old and tired and I don't want to work 80 hours a week. And I absolutely love efficiency, so knowing that I'm doing it all while at work and leaving work for the day will make me feel like a genius and a good mom and wife.”
The goal of this mini-course is to equip you with the courage and plan you need to set boundaries and actually hold to them so that you can only work your contracted hours. To do this we will identify your current season of life and what matters most in it, dream about what you can do when you AREN’T working 50-60 hour weeks, commit to boundaries, and create margin for the inevitable overflow (which will now be the exception not the rule.) We will do a thorough analysis of your productivity at work and talk through strategies to maximize the time you do have. Work time will become “go time” so that home time can become “no time!” I will also equip those of you with 3+ preps with specific strategies for your unique workload.
At the end of this unit, you will have a clearly defined what matters most, set boundaries and a work schedule you can actually maintain, and made a commitment to drastically change how you do this job so that you can stop working overtime and reclaim your life outside of your teaching job.
This mini-course is the 7th and final “unit” in my comprehensive Secondary Science Simplified® virtual PD bundle. To check out the full bundle with over 15 hours of virtual professional development, click here.

When unzipped, the folder includes:
It will take *2 hours to watch all of the video content (broken down into 5 separate video lessons).
However, at the end of each lesson, I give suggested “homework” and reflection questions for you to walk through. If you do all of the homework and use the support documents as recommended, it will most likely take you an additional 1-2 hours to work through it all.
*Note: The hours on the PD certificate included reflect only the time spent on the video lessons, as the additional time it will take to do the rest of the content will vary by teacher. Thus for consistency’s sake, all PD certificates included in my virtual PD courses are based on the amount of video content included.
It does not. All of the instructional content is delivered as pre-recorded videos on YouTube. This allows you the flexibility to work ENTIRELY at your OWN PACE and to consume the content whenever it best fits into YOUR schedule!
I totally get that, which is EXACTLY why I created a free virtual PD mini-course you can try out first before making an investment in this one!
My Labs When Limited mini-course is entirely free and designed to equip teachers who feel like they have limited time, resources, space, and energy to execute labs. It is set up exactly like this mini-course is so you can see the style before you invest!
In addition, if you find value in this smaller free course, you will ABSOLUTELY find value in this one!
Still unsure? Check out my free podcast for secondary science teachers here! This will help you discern if you like my teaching style as well.
I of course cannot speak for ALL schools and districts, but from my personal experience (and what I’ve heard from many, many teachers I’ve become connected with through It’s Not Rocket Science®), most PD opportunities provided by the district are not created by people with any classroom experience and are rarely relevant or applicable to what you are doing in your classroom. Many PD opportunities that are provided by the school are generic and not specific to being a secondary science teacher.
Oftentimes I found that these types of PD courses ADDED to my load rather than lessening it.
THIS course, however, was written BY a secondary science teacher FOR secondary science teachers.
Everything in it is PRACTICAL and MANAGEABLE. No theories or hypothetical examples that are completely unrealistic. Every example will be from my own experiences, with my own unpredictable students. Every strategy and system will be one I have actually used myself – both in a public high school and in a private school. I’ve been in your shoes and thus you can count on this course, and all my others, to be authentic and practical.
If you have been teaching 5, 10, 15, or 20+ years and working 60 hour weeks is your norm, this course is for you.
If you feel like you don’t have a life outside of your teaching job, this course is for you.
If you are a new teacher and are already feeling overwhelmed and want to set up healthy work/life boundaries so you can actually have a sustainable career, than this course is for you.
This job can be done, and done REALLY well, in only 40-45 hours per week. I am a testament to this!! The year I won teacher of the year I had 5 preps, multiple extracurricular responsibilities, and never worked more than 45 hours a week (and that was the EXCEPTION. Most weeks it was my contracted 40!!)
This unit is really the culmination of ALL of the units in the Secondary Science Simplified® comprehensive course bundle! I will reference content from every other unit but this one does stand alone if you just want a master class in how to achieve work/life balance.
Unlike my other mini-courses, this one can really be taken by any teacher. However, please know that ALL of my teaching experience has been as a high school science teacher (with the exception of a few sections of 8th grade physical science a few years at the small private school I taught in.) Because of this, all of the information taught in my courses will be delivered from that perspective.
Every example I use is specific to secondary science teachers. If you are NOT a high school or middle school science teacher, I recommend first checking out my free podcast and seeing if you find value in it. If you do, then I think you would still find great value in this mini-course.
